Volunteer fire department at a drill

In short

Gumb is a fire department app for volunteer fire departments and youth fire brigades. Fire chiefs and officers set up the drill schedule for the whole year as recurring events, firefighters respond by the response deadline, and drill attendance can be exported as an Excel file filtered by period, event type and group, for example for the annual report. Fire watches and duties at events become their own events with tasks, and training material sits right on the event. Gumb is not an emergency alerting app and does not replace alerting.

From chat chaos to a clear drill schedule

What costs fire chiefs and officers time between two drills, and how Gumb fixes it.

Without Gumb: On drill night you only find out at the station who is actually coming.

With Gumb: Firefighters respond by the deadline. You plan the drill with the crew that will really be there.

Without Gumb: For the fire watch at the town fair you call people one by one until every post is covered.

With Gumb: The fire watch is its own event with tasks. Members sign up themselves, and you see who takes on what.

Without Gumb: For the annual report you add up drill attendance from paper lists.

With Gumb: You export drill attendance as an Excel file, for example every drill of the active crew last year.

Without Gumb: When a drill is canceled, some only find out once they are standing at the station.

With Gumb: You switch the drill to an event type such as “Canceled”. It stays visible in the calendar, and a push notification goes out if you want.

We use this system in our aid organisation and at work. We are very happy with it, as we had been looking for a working and reliable system for a long time. The app offers many options, including staff and equipment management, and above all makes our work easier. Simply recommendable. A clear 5-star rating

FAQ: the fire department app

Does Gumb replace fire department alerting?

No. Gumb is not an emergency alerting app and replaces neither pagers nor sirens nor an alerting system. For real emergencies you keep using your alerting. Gumb organizes everything that can be planned: drills, training sessions, fire watches, meetings and the youth fire brigade.

How do I set up the drill schedule for the whole year?

When you create a drill, choose “Repeat Event” and set the pattern: daily, weekly, monthly or custom. With your own event types you tell drills, training sessions and meetings apart, so you can analyze them separately later.

How do I document drill attendance for the annual report?

Under Statistics you export the attendance report, with one row per person and event, as an Excel file. Before that you filter by period, event type and group, for example every drill of the active crew last year. It is based on the responses, and for past drills you can correct answers and status afterwards.

How do I staff fire watches and duties at events?

You create the fire watch as its own event, and members respond to it. Posts such as driver or catering become tasks right on the event: members sign up themselves, or you assign them. Everyone sees who takes on what.

Can the active crew, the youth fire brigade and single companies plan separately?

Yes. Every group gets its own group scheduler. Group events are only visible to the members of that group, events for the whole department are visible to everyone. Members of several groups find all their events in one place.

How do parents respond for their child in the youth fire brigade?

Every child needs their own account with their own email address. Parents log into their child's account with the same credentials and respond to the drill. Admins can create children's accounts upfront. A shared family login is in the works.

Who can create drills and see the reports?

Gumb has four roles: owner, admin, group leader and member. Command works as admin and sees every event. Officers get the group leader role, schedule events for their group and can download the reports. Members respond.

What do I do if a drill is canceled at short notice?

Do not delete the drill, switch it to an event type such as “Canceled”. That way it stays visible in the calendar, even for members who missed the push notification. After you edit it, Gumb asks whether a notification should be sent.

How do I share training material and fact sheets?

Material for one drill goes right on the event. “General documents” are visible to all members, a group folder only to that group. Files can be up to 50 MB each. Owners, admins and group leaders upload them.

Can I also reach people without a Gumb account, such as the town?

Yes. Admins and group leaders send emails from the Gumb web app and can add up to 100 external addresses. Recipients do not see who else received the email.
